A New Convertible in Town
With the mild weather moving into the New York area it reminds me of an almost forgotten "therapy" I'd like to call open air therapy. AKA riding in a convertible. Well, as it turns out Land Rover is introducing a new 2 door convertible of the Evoque Model for this year. After initial intrigue, I realized that it was more along the lines of a once bubbly soda gone flat. I first gained a respect for Land Rover back in 2011 when I saw the Land Rover off-road club at Rausch Creek off-road park in PA. They had a whole line of sturdy, square British 4x4's mixing it up in the mud and muck of the clay based soil. But now, however, they've reached out to a new audience that is more concerned with bluetooth capability rather than off-road prowess. The new 2017 Land Rover Evoque convertible is a top down four seater appealing to a younger crowd (or their parents bank rolling it) with a base price starting at only $52K! The Evoque is a lower profile, sleeker, rounded edge
small SUV with many cool options. It boasts a 2.0 L 4 cylinder turbocharged engine supported by a 9 speed auto transmission. Its special aluminum/steel suspension is light weight and is aided by sensors that balance the vehicle almost eliminating vibration to the steering wheel.
Although the ride has been reported to be refined and comfortable this design reminds me more a VW convertible rather than a Land Rover. With the top up it looks like it should be parked along side the compact cars instead of SUV's. I'm not opposed to change but I can't help but think this vehicle is a far distance relative to the Land Rover legacy from across the pond.
