Detroit Electric's SP:01 Roadster

Detroit Electric, well known for its early start in electric cars during the early 1900's, is now back on the scene! Not familiar with Detroit Electric? You're not alone. They slowly faded out of business and into history when gas powered cars became more reliable and Ford mass produced the Model T for a fraction of the price. (More cool history in Part 2 of this article.)

Despite the company's last production car in 1939; there is new life in Detroit this year! Thanks to a steep $1.8 billion joint venture with Chinese electric company Far East Smarter Energy. They will only produce nearly 1,000 of the SP:01's for a mere price tag of around $135 k. And here's what you get: a 37 kWh lithium-polymer battery lasting 180 miles, Top speed is 155 mph (249 km/h), 0 to 60 mph (0 to 100 kph) in 3.7 seconds. The electric motor drives the rear wheels via a 4 speed manual transmission. While this alt-fuel 2 seater enters a crowded market between Tesla's new forthcoming roadster- and many others. What stands out about the SP:01 is its ability to not only be a fun car to drive but the fact that you can use it to power your home in an emergency! It can reverse charge to run home appliances and such!
