There've been a great deal of buzz about new pickup trucks entering the market. From VW, to the return of the Ford Ranger, and, of coarse, the new Jeep Gladiator pickup that has been teased so many times with spy photos I think I saw it in a dream. While all of these mid-sized trucks are appealing, I mean, come on, who doesn't like a good pick up, there are an increasing number of alternative fuel vehicles available.
So, who is this mystery manufacturer - Tesla? Toyota? Nope- This is an all NEW American company that is building fully Electric vehicles. They're called Rivian and are only interested
in the hottest selling vehicles, i.e. SUV's and pickups.
I've been especially interested in this segment since I own an SUV. But, its fuel economy is about as good as an old Fiat - LOUSY! In fact, it's downright terrible! On a normal day, I'm lucky to break 18 mpg. The only comfort in driving a V-8 gas-powered vehicle is that when I tow I don't lose any mileage at all. This brings me to my next point;
Rivian is not only appealing since it's electric but it can actually be powerful! Some pickups on the market are, shall we say cute, but they really can't be used in a utility fashion. You know, to pull cargo of anything more than bikes or kayaks. Rivian boasts it can pull over 11,000 lbs. and has many innovative features like the so called "gear tunnell" that can hold hard to fit cargo like golf clubs or even a stroller.
It's payload is 1700 lbs, respectable for its class. But most of all, it's fast! According to Rivian's stats it can go from 0-60 mph in 3 seconds - just in case you want to race the other electrics out there!
I'm looking forward to seeing this pickup and it's sibling the R1-S at the this year's auto show in NY. Will it live up to the hype?
