Uniden's Web Grip Air Vent Phone Holder: Product Review

An inexpensive yet decent phone holder for moderate road conditions.
Uniden Web Grip Air Vent Phone Holder

Now that most of us are traveling again by car, you’ll need some accessories to make it a safe trip. Unless your car has a built-in GPS feature (and one that is worth using), you’ll need a key accessory for your car’s dashboard- a cell phone holder. If you’re like me, you don’t want just any phone holder but one that’s versatile and strong enough to hold your phone in place even while off-roading to your weekend cabin in the woods.

I had the opportunity to test out Uniden’s Web Grip Air Vent Cell Phone Holder. It’s surprisingly lightweight and versatile holding many different size cell phones, as there are a plethora of them out there. Overall, I like the Uniden phone holder for its easy setup (within a few minutes at most) but it has some drawbacks too, even being competitively priced for under $10. It may not cuddle your phone as tightly as you’d like if the road ahead isn’t paved in gold.

If you’re looking for a “phone cradle” while you whisk around town driving your kids to soccer and running errands you found a match. The Uniden Web Grip Air Vent Phone Holder won’t break the bank as it retails for less than $10 (I purchased mine for $6!). I was initially suspicious of the cheap price wondering if it would be chintzy and make me regret the purchase altogether. However, one of the best things about this product, unlike many of its competitors, is that you can try it out before you buy it! How often do you wonder how good a product is out of the box? Well, Uniden thought of that. This was a key tipping point in purchasing this product over its competitors.

While the packaging is inviting the consumer to try it out, (it even says “Try Me” in bold letters) what I didn’t realize was how the real-world test drive would change my opinion! The alligator clip that attaches to the air vent is sturdy and has a quick-release button that will allow you to easily remove it if you don’t want to advertise what’s in your car when you park it. The downside is that the “web grip” that secures your phone in place isn’t as robust in maintaining its grip. The silicone grip knobs that come into direct contact with your phone are gentle on your phone’s delicate glass surface. While this design is helpful, Uniden doesn’t provide various size knobs allowing you a more custom fit.

While the setup was a breeze, “ultra-quick” as the labeling brags, (the hardest part was taking it out of its packaging!) I was disappointed by how temperate this device could be on the road through life’s daily chores. My test phone was a lighter (and smaller than most) iPhone SE 2020 version. While the Uniden held it in place during smaller bumps in the road like patched over blacktop, it quickly became butterfingers while driving over medium to large bumps like potholes or speed bumps. In fact, there were even a few instances my phone would pop out of the cradle-like a pop tart from the toaster and went flying out falling in between the gap of the seat and console! You know, the black hole where all things go to die? Rest assured, I was able to rescue my phone but had to pull over to do so. This indeed is its biggest drawback. The whole point of buying this type of accessory is to keep your phone near eye level as it shouts directives, I mean directions on how to get to from point A to point B. If you live in a well-paved area and are lucky enough to not have washboard bumps in the road. This is the product you need! But, if you’re like me and drive into a major city where smooth sailing is the stuff of dreams, you better beware. The pothole-ridden streets will send your phone into orbit and who knows where it’ll land when your GPS asks you to turn left!

I wouldn’t throw out the baby with the bathwater (or the phone holder either) since every car’s suspension is different. My test vehicle was a small Toyota coupe with moderate shock absorption but newer cars, and especially SUV’s have really softened the blow that city roads can throw at you. If you’re looking for an inexpensive phone holder that allows you to quickly release your phone multiple times a trip and will hold a variety of phone models, this product will work for you, just be prepared to catch it on occasion.
